before_send and filtering not working.

I have been trying to get client side filtering working with the python sentry_sdk module and so far it appears to not be working. The error I am attempting to filter on the client side is still getting sent and visible in the Sentry events.

import sentry_sdk
from sentry_sdk import capture_message

ignored_errors = ['division by zero']

def filter_errors(event, hint):

    if 'exc_info' in hint:

        exc_type, exc_value, tb = hint['exc_info']


        if exc_value.args[0] in ['division by zero']:
            print(f"Found {exc_value.args[0]} in errors to ignore!")
            return None

    print("Returning event")

    return event

sentry_url = "https://<snip>"

sentry_sdk.init(
    dsn=sentry_url,
    before_send=filter_errors
)


division_by_zero = 1 / 0

Here is the output of my test:

$ python test.py 
Found division by zero in errors to ignore!
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/home/frankemmons/Projects/Arva/sentry/test.py", line 29, in <module>
    division_by_zero = 1 / 0
ZeroDivisionError: division by zero
Sentry is attempting to send 1 pending error messages
Waiting up to 2 seconds
Press Ctrl-C to quit

So what am I missing? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
