Can you select a node by name using env() ?

Hi there,

I am just beginning to learn yq syntax, without prior knowledge of jq. I am simply trying to retrieve a top-level node, but its name should be given by an environment variable.

So for example if I want a node named xyz, this works:

yq '.xyz' example.yaml 
# or
yq '."xyz"' example.yaml

but this does not:

target=xyz yq '.env(target)' example.yaml

Error: 1:6: invalid input text "target)"

this does not work either:

target=xyz yq '.strenv(target)' example.yaml

I am sorry, I don't see how to do this, is it possible without resorting to the shell string interpolation?

I found one way to achieve this, but it still seems unnecessarily verbose:

target=xyz yq '.[] | select(key == strenv(target))'

You were pretty close. It is possible using the dynamic keys syntax.

target=catpants yq '.[env(target)]' example.yaml
