Ran into this myself. The instructions are a bit off. Here's my solution.

After installing with nvm and npm install -g, it ends up in $HOME/.nvm/versions/node/v22.2.0/bin/mcp-server-perplexity-ask

The next instruction uses npx.
npx is expecting to execute a package from NPM and this package does not exist on NPM. Other MCP servers are and it would be more accessible if it were available on NPM.
At present, npm install creates an executable, and since I use nvm, it ended up in that complicated path.

6. Finally, run the command:

I don't think there are any tools in this MCP Server that are workable at this moment. (2025/4/2)

I made it work, just builded and used command node and the path to index.js file as arg and on env I added the api key . It does do the research.
