This proposal would close out this issue: ziglang/zig-bootstrap#246 . That's not an issue but a design choice. I propose adding an option to override the default behavior for instances where the developer or user may want to set the ZIG_VERSION string when bootstrapping or building the compiler or are in a situation where git is not available or desired.
